A Global Scholarly Platform

Focused on rigorous, theory-building research grounded in emerging market contexts

Our Mission

To build a high-quality international network of business scholars that advances theory, methodology, and impact-driven research in emerging markets.

Why Emerging Markets?

Emerging markets — including India, Brazil, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia — are no longer peripheral contexts. They are:

  • Sites of institutional innovation
  • Laboratories for constraint-driven innovation (e.g., frugal innovation)
  • Lead markets for new business models with fewer regulatory constraints
  • Contexts that challenge the assumptions underlying Western theories

Despite this, research on emerging markets remains fragmented across disciplines and institutions. SEMR aims to institutionalise a global scholarly platform focused on rigorous, theory-building research grounded in emerging market contexts.

Strategic Positioning

SEMR will differentiate itself by:

  1. Focusing on top-tier scholarship
  2. Prioritising theory development, not just contextual replication
  3. Encouraging cross-country comparative work
  4. Bridging Global North–South and South-South collaborations
  5. Supporting early-career scholars in emerging markets

Planned Activities

1. Online Seminars

Paper development format, scientific paper discussions with international scholars.

2. Online Symposiums

1-day online format, thematic focus (e.g., Innovation Under Constraint).

3. Annual Conferences

Starting in Southeast Asia, then Cambridge, and subsequently at an Indian institute.

4. Special Journal Issues

Propose special issues in high-quality journals (AJG3/4/4*; e.g., Journal of Business Ethics). Organise development paper workshops.
